I'm not any kind of scientist, but I have a curious mind and sure antennae for what matters. I have enough basic knowledge of many fields to talk intelligently to technical people, and from there create detailed explanatory copy for the non-technical.

I've worked a lot over the years with BT researchers, with people embedded at various points in the long line from large scale data transmission to the behavioural psychology of call centres. I've enjoyed early insight into much that is only now coming to market, and have long been fascinated with the way fast-emerging technologies may have profound effects on how we organise our lives.

Without planning it, telecommunication has featured like a spine running through my working life. My first professional job was with a firm busy establishing the UK’s fibre optic networks. I’ve done wide-ranging projects for the telecoms giant BT, on everything from internal product and strategic CEO briefings to digital newsletters and customer/community brochures. I’ve produced sales and strategic briefing information for Vodafone, worked on internal comms strategy for O2, and sales team support for Cisco.

More broadly I’ve produced sector and trade communication for Microsoft, sector communication for Logica, and comprehensive sales collateral for datacentre equipment specialist Datacentience. I've written a complete help system for Commerzbank’s online trading operation, and worked extensively with the former national agency for technology in education (Becta), on materials ranging from internal communication strategy, through annual reports and senior management presentations to ad copy.

Technology promises connectivity, but all too easily creates new divides. Many people are wary of change and will resist it. You can (and should) produce clear and comprehensive manuals, but only the enthusiastic will read them. The chasm between the techie and the rest of the world is at the root of many problems in system design and the frequent failure of large-scale change projects. Because I bridge the divide between the tech enthusiast and the ordinary user I can help bring the harmonised thinking these projects depend on but rarely plan properly for.
